The view from atop Mt. Tenguyama that moved even Emperor Shomu was used in a key scene in the manga/novel The Castle of Saigarokuji. I recommend getting there a little early to see Wakanoura illuminated by the morning sun.

This secluded little cafe based out of a remodeled warehouse has become quite famous, even appearing on TV. Originally the warehouse for a textiles company, the cafe's owner remodeled the place by hand, and you can sense the traces of the original building's aesthetic in various places. You can enjoy to your heart's content the gratin specially prepared by the owner of this hugely popular cafe, all while taking in the sights of the clear streams of Kudoyama.

As featured in 'Asahinagu', published in 'Weekly Big Comic Spirits' (Shogakukan), Jison-in leaves quite the impression, not least of which from it's 'Breast Ema's' (An ema is a small wooden plaque left as an offering at shrines). This temple's special breast shaped ema's are something you'll definitely want to make an offering with if you're a woman. A huge number of women make offerings of these 'Breast Ema's' to pray for not just healthy children and safe childbirth, but also for the prevention of/recovery from breast and uterine cancer. As the main building, Miroku-do, is registered as a part of the 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range' UNESCO World Heritage Site, it might also be a good idea to spare a passing thought to the teachings of Kobo-Daishi. And there's one more thing you can't forget, 'Gon, the guide dog of Mt Koya'. As seen in the book from Heart Publishing, this stone statue of a white dog is also sometimes known as 'Kobo-Daishi's guide dog reincarnation' or 'Daishi's dog'.

This sports facility is another location featured in Weekly Big Comic Spirits' (Shogakukan) 'Asahinagu'. During events like the Stamp Rally, fans come to visit here in scores. However, outside of events, the character panels are usually not on display, so be careful when you choose to visit. As you might expect events like the Women's National Naginata Tournament are also held here. Closed: Every Sunday (If Sunday is a public holiday, the building will be closed the next Tuesday instead)

Amano Nagomi Cafe Kyakuden

Calm your spirits at Amano Nagomi Cafe

Nagomi (lit. calming) is a perfect choice of wording for this cafe ran out of an antiquated house, where you can spend a leisurely time letting time drift by. Their 'Japanese Cake Plate' that makes use of special seasonal products goes without saying, but the Amano Rice Meal Set available from their lunch menu is also hugely popular. The popularity of this cafe means they occasionally sell out of certain meals. They also have a limited number of seats available, so if you plan to visit on the weekend/holiday then we suggest you book a reservation at least a day in advance. At the register, you can also purchase Amano cherry tomatoes as well as the eggs used for their puddings and egg rice dishes, cultivated from chickens raised on additive-free feed. Last orders for meals are at 2:30 p.m.
