After climbing up a steep flight of stairs to reach Shiyuen, guests are rewarded with being able to make Japanese paper using the same techniques that Kubo Daishi passed down. While learning in detail about those techniques, guests make their own handmade paper. Learning about the history of papermaking, seeing old papermaking tools, and enjoying the view of the town below from the garden while waiting for the paper to dry is a fantastic experience. Guests come from far and wide to learn about the papermaking process. Many guests return for more than one visit, and some use the paper for their New Year’s cards.
